BBC Bishop opens Bulkington village fete

21st July 2009

The Wadworth Brewery shire horses were the star attraction at Bulkington village fete on Saturday.

The horses collected the fete princess Lottie Foster from the church and transported her and Bishop Bill Ind, who performed the official opening ceremony, to the fete at Leaze Farm, where they remained for the rest of the day giving people rides on the drey they pull.

Jane Coles, secretary of the Bulkington PCC social committee, which organised the fete, said: “I think it was very successful. It’s the first one the village has had for a couple of years.

“We were so lucky with the weather because it poured all day Friday and Sunday.”

Bishop Bill is the former Bishop of Truro who starred in the BBC series An Island Parish and has family in the Melksham area so was asked to perform the opening ceremony.

Fete princess Lottie Foster had six attendants: Brooke Flynn, Emily Symes, Ellie Morgan-Elliot, Lydia Crawford, Beth Downy and Fran Steller.

Attractions at the fete included vintage tractors and lorries, children’s sports, facepainting, a dog show, welly throwing and the usual stalls such as bottles, cakes and bric-a-brac. The Devizes Silver Band also performed.

Almost £1,600 was raised for ongoing maintenance at Christ Church in the village.
