Christ Church Bulkington

Christ Church Bulkington image

Christ Church, Bulkington in the The Church of England Diocese of Salisbury was consecrated on 25th September 1860. Until then, the villagers of Bulkington, then an agricultural village with five farms, a mill, a blacksmith and a pub brewing its own ale, had to walk to Keevil for worship and records show that services were frequently held in houses during the winter months.
After years of discussion and disappointment, Sir Walter Long of Preshute House gave half an acre of land as a free gift to God and His work, also giving building materials and money to help bring the work to an early completion. Dr Gaisford, who was Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and owner of the ‘Manor of Bulkington’, also subscribed £400 towards the cost of the building and it is likely that our little church was named Christ Church in recognition of his generosity..
The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Salisbury and newspaper cuttings of the time show a very happy occasion, with the ceremony beginning with a procession from Dr Gaisford’s (now Withdean House) to the west porch accompanied by a large body of clergy from the surrounding locality.
The 150th Anniversary of the consecration was celebrated on Saturday 25th September 2010 and Bishop Bill Ind (from the Seaside Parish) attended to take our service.
