Accident and Emergency – 24 hour

Warminster hospital (01985 212076) has a minor injuries unit, open 9 am to 5.30 pm, but at weekends only.

Trowbridge hospital (01225 752558) has a unit for minor injuries (24 hours, seven days a week).

Police – in an emergency, call 999. For all other police matters, call Wiltshire Police on 0845 4087000. Unhappily, Warminster Police Station is now closed to the public. Trowbridge is open from 9am-12 noon and from 1- 5 pm, on week-days only, while Salisbury Police Station is open from 8 am to 8 pm. The telephone number is the same for all stations. Ambulance & Air

Refuse Collections & Recycling Bin Collections in the Mid Wylye Valley are on Thursdays - green bins for garden waste and grey bins for all other rubbish, in alternate weeks. In weeks which include a Bank Holiday, the bins are collected on Fridays. (In 2007, these Fridays are 13 April, 4 May, 1 June and 31 August.) Around the Christmas 2007 holidays, there will be no collection in Christmas week, and the next collection will be on Friday 4 January. For more information, call Beverley Harvey on 01225 776655.

Black box collections are also on every other Thursdays, the next one on 5 April. Up to two black boxes are provided free, to order a black box call 0845 6032085.

To buy a grey wheelie bin – the large plastic bin (240 litres) costs £35, the half- size bin is £25. To order a bin, ring 01225 785031. This number is about to change, as Focsa is taking over from Cleanaway. If your bin is damaged by the dustcart men, there is a free repair. Green bins are free.

To arrange a bulky waste collection – (for furniture and other large items) call 01225 785031. There is a charge of £17.50 (half-price for those on income support) and that charge pays for up to four bulky household items.

A mini recycling site for glass, paper, and cans is at Stockton Plough Cottages. For plastic and cardboard, there are sites at Codford High Street and Heytesbury High Street.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre at Bath Road, Warminster is open seven days a week, between 9 am and 8 pm from 1 April to 31 October and from 9 am to 6 pm from November to March. It takes paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, textiles, cans, all metals, garden waste, wood, car batteries and motor oil, rubble, soil and ‘white goods’ (fridges, cookers, etc.), but asbestos by prior arrangement only. Just about anything can be taken there for recycling except unmarked chemicals.

Bus Passes or Senior Railcards are issued free to residents over sixty, but you can only have one of them free. The bus passes give free travel within Wiltshire, while Railcards cut most fares by a third. Bonfires should be burnt in the evenings after 6 pm, avoiding times when people might be in their gardens or drying their washing. Those who ignore the bonfire code can cause a nuisance to others.

Home Improvement Grants – Grants for the less well off are available for home improvements, both for owner- occupiers and tenants – Renovation Grants, Disabled Facilities Grants, and Home Repair Assistance Grants. Local Records and Archives – the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office, still (April 2007) at Trowbridge (01225 713134) is in the process of moving to Chippenham. It has a huge quantity of parish registers, Wiltshire wills, tithe awards, enclosure maps, etc., for local and family historians. The Local Studies Library has collections of printed sources, such as local newspapers.
