Whats On

The Lions Club is a service minded group of women and men whose aim is to assist those members of our Community who are in need of some assistance to enhance their lives. We formed in 1970 and still have two of the original members and a number who joined in the first few years. At July 2009 we have 23 members and always welcome new people who wish to contribute to the welfare of our community and there are no restrictions for membership based on age, employment or qualification. Our major fund raising events are Fun Day in May and our collection with a Christmas float with Santa in Charge. However, we organise smaller events throughout the year to ensure we have sufficient money to meet many of the urgent needs in Bradford on Avon and District of folk who are less fortunate than most.

Lions Clubs were first organised in 1917 by an American Melvin Jones and there are now more than 26,000 clubs spread through most countries of the world including Russia and China. Although we are still American based we operate in the UK with a large degree of independence. Membership can sometimes be demanding but is always worthwhile and rewarding. To see the magic smile of a young child when Santa calls chases away the coldness of winter and makes the time given so worthwhile. Lions Clubs is the largest service organisation in the world ahead of Rotary , Roundtable and similar organisations. Contact Chris Penny if you would like to join or help at events or simply want more information.

We do so many things but just by example -parcels or flowers for the elderly at Christmas, Senior Citizens tea party with singing, assistance to young people undertaking humanitarian work overseas, providing financial grants to local schools who are endeavouring to teach the children the need and benefits of eco projects. We cannot help every application particularly now money is so scarce but we look at each cas carefully and decide each on merit.
